Report from OLDIE-fans

Radio Nora lud am gestrigen Samstag zur 19.Oldie-Night ein und 11.000 Zuschauer kamen in die beeindruckende Kulisse der Kalkbergarena in Bad Segeberg. Sehr gerne folgten auch wir dieser Einladung und berichten für euch hautnah von einer der besten Oldie-Partys des Jahres! Mit dabei waren Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich, Boney M. feat. Liz Mitchell, Matchbox, die NDW Kultband Spider Murphy Gang sowie Mercury und Dave Ashby. Als absolute Oberknaller waren Nazareth und SLADE live on stage . It`s time for Rock 'n’ Roll…

Gig Report from Berndt Huebl, Munich 

last weekend I visited Hamburg and vicinity. I took the opportunity to see Slade playing there and at the Radio Nora Oldie night in Bad Segeberg . So here’s a short gig report:

On Friday, May 12th, Slade played at the “Landhaus Walter” in Hamburg. When I arrived there about one hour before the start of the concert the first I was to see was Hanne, who ran a small merchandising stall at the entrance of the concert hall. Slade and a merchandising stall – very unusual ;-))! You could buy tour-T-shirts, carrier bags, mouse pads, the Superyob CD, the Very Best of 2-CD-set and the Very Best of DVD.

The venue was sold out and so people stood packed in the small hall as the boys went on stage. It took them just a few minutes and two songs to get the audience dancing and roaring. It’s always the same – the smaller the place, the better the band. They seem to really like those “intimate” venues… For me it was my first gig as a “radio play”, because Hanne allowed me to help her with the merchandising stall. I sat adjacent to the entrance door and she went to look after Don from behind the stage, because it was incredible hot inside. The boys played their usual set list. Hanne returned during “Bangin` Man”, so I tried to do my very best to reach my usual spot in front of the stage. But no chance, people were standing more than close and celebrated.

After the show I made acquaintance with Wilfried Mende, president of the former German fan club. He’s a really nice guy and we both sold T-Shirts and CD`s whilst Hanne helped Don with his equipment. When most people had left the venue we packed things together and took it backstage. Just a short hello to Don and John (the youngest of them all, but he was very tired as he said). Hanne said thanks for the help (for what? It was a real pleasure to help her :-)) and goodbye until tomorrow.

On Saturday, May 13th, the Radio Nora Oldie night in Bad Segeberg was to start at 6 p.m. I took my time to get there because I couldn’t imagine Slade playing before sunset. But what a shame – when I arrived at the parking lot I heard them doing “Noize” in the distance!!! It was just 6:40 p.m.! So I ran the last 1,5 kilometre to the Freilichttheater as fast as I could. Eventually I missed about half of the gig so I can’t tell you the whole set list. I only know for sure that it was a bit shortened and that they weren’t allowed to play an encore.

Once again I helped Hanne with the merchandising stall. After the concert Don, John and Robin showed up while Spider Murphy Gang (a famous German band) was playing. Robin asked me how the sound was, because the Freilichttheater is an amphitheatre which can be difficult for sound mixing, as we all know. But I could approve a very clear and genuine sound with no echoes. On this occasion I would like to thank Robin and Tim for their terrific work for the band since many years. Robin is touring with them since about 6 years as he told me.

Don was so kind to invite me to the after show party in the hotel. It was really unique to sit at the bar, smoking a cigar and chatting with him, Hanne, John, Robin and Jan Visscher from Berlin (on tour with Nazareth as he told me).

Finally I would like to thank the boys for the many years of great fun they bestowed me. It was a great pleasure to see them all again. Especially Hanne and Don are so one-of-a-kind friendly people that my English is not good enough to describe it in an appropriate way. Can`t wait for Dusslingen on June, 4th.
