Slade - In For A Penny; Raves & Faves

In the early 1970s, glam rock band Slade dominated the British charts with 17 Top 20 hits, including six at #1. They also took time to make the rock film Flame, in which they portrayed a British rock band`s exhilirating rise to the top, and the deceit, disillusionment, and dispair that followed. It remains one of the most compelling portrayals of the music business ever filmed.

While their star didn`t soar as high in the States, the band wasn`t completely overlooked. Covers of "Cum On Feel The Noize" and "Mama Weer All Crazee Now" by `80s rock band Quiet Riot brought Slade renewed interest. Other bands followed suit with covers by groups as disparate as Oasis, The Runaways and The Wonderstuff. Still active, Slade is ripe for discovery by rock fans of all ages.

http://www.shoutfactorystore.com/prod.aspx?pfid=2941370

In 2003, Shout! Factory corrected a glaring injustice with the release of Get Yer Boots On: The Best Of Slade, the only CD domestically available from one of the all-time great rock bands. Now Shout! Factory presents another fantastic slab of Slade with In For A Penny: Raves & Faves, which digs deeper into the Slade catalog, presenting a connoisseur`s selection of lesser-known tracks that prove these hard-rocking Brits were more than just a one-dimensional singles act.

The quintessential glam rock band, Slade shook the British charts throughout the `70s with their boot-stomping, glitter-shaking anthems and outrageous visual style. Their hard-hitting sound influenced everyone from Kiss and The Sex Pistols to Mötley Crüe and Oasis.

Tracks:
1. Shape Of Things To Come Slade
2. C`Mon C`Mon Slade

Title: Slade In Flame - Collectors Edition

Artist: Slade
Cat No: USPDVD014
Barcode: 6984581714744
Playing Time: Approx 144 mins

When Slade embarked upon their one and only movie in 1974, fans and critics alike were expecting something like a Glam Rock update of The Beatles` `A Hard Days Night`, released a decade earlier. After all, Slade were the ultimate good time band: irreverent, loud and armed with a terrific set of singalong stompers. Expectations were confounded, however, upon release of the film. Gritty realism, exposing the seedy reality of band life in the late 60s, was the order of the day and Flame is all the better for it. Now rightly lauded as one of the finest rock/pop movies ever made, Union Square Pictures are proud to present a deluxe collectors edition DVD of Flame featuring a brand new print of the film digitally remastered from the original negative, a remastered soundtrack CD, a new documentary featurette on the making of the movie including interviews with all four band members, director Richard Loncraine and co-star Tom Conti, and a 16 page colour booklet with an informative essay by Slade aficionado Chris Ingham, related memorabilia plus rare and previously unseen photos with revealing commentary from Jim Lea.

Track List
1. How Does It Feel
2. Them Kinda Monkeys Can`t Swing
3. So Far So Good
4. Summer Song (Wishing You Were Here)
5. O.K. Yesterday Was Yesterday
6. Far Far Away
7. This Girl
8. Lay It Down
9. Heaven Knows
10. Standin` On The Corner

Finally, many of you will be aware that Slade songwriter and

But for those that aren't, please read on:

The album, entitled "Therapy" is distributed online and "download" only at:

http://www.jimleamusic.com

"Every time I have spoken to a record company about putting my music out
there, it always seems to be inexorably linked with touring, which is a
great consumer of time, energy and of course money, in other words, a
great obstacle. I may be a Luddite in some ways, but only a fool would
insist on following old, unviable routes of action without looking at
alternatives. It may look like ''if you can't beat 'em join 'em'' but the
facts are that I have been disgruntled with some of the attitudes of the
music business for some time now, This is why I have gone online with the
webshop.

I had the privilege of being in an amazing hard working band for twenty
five years and over that quarter of a century we certainly paid our dues
over and over again. But in such a different, albeit shrinking market (and
technology has played a part here) what used to be the norm doesn't seem
to fit anymore. I was never a naturally public figure, but now I am
re-emerging as an artist in my own right, mostly free from the
restrictions of the industry. There will be more to come soon, but for now
make the journey, step on the train, and get some Therapy . A Thinking
album .

"I hope you like what you hear "- Jim Lea

SLADE

Ambrose Slade - Beginnings / Play It Loud
Slayed?
Old New Borrowed And Blue
The Live Anthology: Slade Alive! / Slade Alive Vol. Two / Slade On Stage / Alive At Reading `80
(Salvo)

Album set covers the visitation and the most huge boom. Ambrose Slade worked out a strange cover mixture on the debut album in the year of 1969.

On the skinhead covered Play It Loud the style and strengths are starting to come out. The heavy power of melodic pop and Noddy Holder`s rasp voice are emphasized on their own tracks like Raven, Dirty Joker and Sweet Box. A magnificient cover of The Shape Of Things To Come and Get Down And Get With It blow up the pot.

Slade Alive! (1972) brings forward the live power foreseen by the debut hit. Seven songs are storming in interactive correlation with the audience.

Slayed? is a feat of strength of an established singles band. An album titled Whatever happened to Slade? was released later, but the matter was under consideration already, when Old New Borrowed And Blue was issued.

The conquest of America failed, but Alive Vol. Two (1978) proves that the band was in a good shape. A hurried festival ep was followed by the solid On Stage record, where the hit songs are beaten by new power shots: Rock`n`Roll Preacher, When I`m Dancin` I Ain`t Fightin`, Lock Up Your Daughters and We`ll Bring The House Down.

Well delivered hit retrospective and Slade In Flame movie soundtrack would do good still.

Slade In Flame deluxe treatment

Slade In Flame movie soundtrack album to be re-released in April 2007. The movie to be screened in London with special guests!

That`s Entertainment 28.01.2007:
Cum and see the pixturz! Slade In Flame to receive the ultimate deluxe treatment

Released April 2007 through Salvo Records:

- "Slade in Flame is one of the most incredible "rock and story" films ever produced. Like it or not." (Q Magazine)
- "Fundamentally more important to the development of music than Radiohead" (Noel Gallagher)
- "The Citizen Kane of pop pictures." (Mark Kermode in MOJO)

Slade are finally getting the recognition that they deserve. Following the recent release of the first six Slade studio albums and a 4-CD anthology, The Slade Box, Wolverhampton`s finest are back in the spotlight. Now, the reissue program, through Salvo Records (a Union Square Music imprint), rolls out into Spring 2007 with the deluxe DVD release of their universally lauded movie, Slade In Flame (originally released in November 1974).

The 2 disc package also includes the soundtrack CD (to be released as a standalone CD in February), an album regarded by many as Slade`s finest.

Featuring a brand new print of the film, digitally remastered from the original negative, this is one of 2007`s most anticipated music DVD releases.

When Slade embarked upon their one and only movie in 1974, fans and critics alike were expecting something akin to a Glam Rock update of The Beatles` `A Hard Days Night`, released a decade earlier.

After all, in the dark days of a Britain beset by strikes, power cuts and a collective musical identity crisis, Slade were the ultimate good time band: irreverent, loud and armed with a terrific set of singalong stompers.

However, expectations were confounded upon the release of the film. Gritty realism, exposing the mythology of band life in the late Sixties, was the order of the day and Slade In Flame is all better for it. Over 30 years on, it is universally lauded as one of the finest rock/pop films ever made. As a treat for all Slade fans and lovers of glam rock, the set includes a luxurious booklet containing detailed notes, rare archive photos annotated by Jim Lea and images of related memorabilia.

Also included on the DVD is documentary featurette on the making of the movie, which includes revealing interviews with all four band members, director Richard Loncraine and actor Tom Conti.

Bonus features to include: 60 Minute Featurette with exclusive interviews 16 page booklet featuring a selection of associated photos with commentary from Jim Lea and much more N.B – Around release of the DVD, a London screening with special guests (TBA) will be announced. Details to follow.

Title: Slade - Nobody`s Fools

Artist: Slade
Cat No: SALVOCD005
Playing Time: 57:24

Recorded during their mid-1970s sojourn in the States, Nobody`s Fools is arguably the most diverse and evolved album of Slade`s career. Beautifully remastered and augmented by rare B-sides, this is essential Slade.

1. Nobody`s Fool
2. Do The Dirty

4. Pack Up Your Troubles

6. Get On Up

11. All The World Is A Stage

15. When The Chips Are Down

Colin Harper, RECORD COLLECTOR:

The beginning of the end, or the end of the beginning? Recorded during their valiant assault on America and released in March 1976, as sleevenote writer Chris Ingham asserts, Nobody`s Fools brings to the table "fresh textures and ambitious songwriting and remains the most varied of Slade`s long players." But it was their last UK Top 20 album proper.

Having maintained their UK singles successes with the standalone Thanks For The Memory and top-drawer trailers for the album In For A Penny and Let`s Call It Quits (all three imaginatively moving on from their big-chorus boot-stompers of 1972/73), Nobody`s Fool, regarded by Noddy Holder as the band`s most neglected, was to end their 17-song run of hits. Funk-rock album track Do The Dirty might have been a better choice, while Get On Up (similarly American-influenced, albeit exploding to better effect on 1978`s Slade Alive II) proved they could rock stadiums with the best.

A whiff of US prog can be detected but, largely, the old boozy Black Country humour is alive and well. It`s engagingly eclectic, if not truly classic. But this is a terrific remaster, adding the relevant B-sides and Thanks For The Memory, though not the single edit of Nobody`s Fool itself.

Slade Tipped As Possible Christmas Number One!

re-released next month.Slade’s

‘Merry Xmas Everybody’,

http://www.entertainmentwise.com/artists/00015050_sladesingle.jpg

which was the Christmas number one in 1973, is to be

Easily one of the greatest Christmas songs ever ever, the Noddy Holder-sung classic has never actually been re-released before; it only feels like it because it’s rightfully on the television twenty-four hours a day during the holiday season.

Since the announcement was made ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’ has already been installed as second favourite for the Yuletide top-spot with odds of 12/1, beating the festive releases from Girls Aloud, McFly, Westlife, Crazy Frog, and Brian May & Cliff Richard. The favourite is of course the eventual winner of The X-Factor.

Nick Weinberg of Ladbrokes said: "Punters are definitely giving Slade the Nod to Hold off the field. -They're second in the betting behind X-Factor but it looks as though Simon Cowell wont have things his own way this Christmas. The song's a classic and our customers are backing it to have a massive impact."

‘Merry Xmas Everybody’ is released December 4th.

The Very Best Of Slade DVD review by Power Play

http://images.play.com/covers/819821m.jpg

The Very Best Of Slade DVD review in the February issue of Power Play, Rock and Metal magazine, by Mik Gaffney:

"Watching through this DVD brought back so many memories of seeing Slade when I was younger. They have so much awesome material yet they`re remembered for that Xmas song and not much else, which is a travesty.

"Coz I Luv You", "Mama Weer All Crazee Now", "My Friend Stan", "Cum On Feel The Noize" are all classics and feature here. A lot of the performances are ropey at best, but this was the 70s for the most part, and a fair proportion of the tracks are from TV shows such as `Top Of The Pops` where the band had to mime while a load of goons danced around them.

My main gripe is that despite the `Best Of` tag, it misses great swathes of cool material out. There`s no "We`ll Bring The House Down" or "Lock Up Your Daughters", without which this really can`t be considered their best."

The Other Fab Four

The Very Best of Slade DVD review in Record Collector magazine February 2006 by John Medd

If proof at all were needed that Wolverhampton`s finest did, indeed take up residency at Television Centre between 1971 and 1975, then this is it. Top Of The Pops was never quite the same again after our mutton-chopped quartet had stopped troubling the charts.

All the usual suspects are here - Coz I Luv You, Mama Weer All Crazee Now, Cum On Feel The Noize (it seems Holder/Lea actually invented text messaging). But what sets this collection apart from most Slade anthologies is the inclusion of minor hits like Thanks For The Memory and Give Us A Goal - the latter being a 1978 tacky promo film shot at a football ground. Their 80`s output is tagged on at the end... big hair ballad My Oh My and the Big Country-esque Run Runaway.

The bonus material comes by way of a Granada TV special from 1971. Entitled Set Of Six, it`s the recording of Noddy et al playing a blistering live set in front of an intimate crowd. This is the real Slade, giving the DVD a full five stars for the inclusion of this gig alone.
