Best of the region at Express &Star Spotlight awards

The cream of the Black Country’s entertainment industry was honoured at the Express & Star’s star-packed Spotlight Awards.

The Civic Hall was transformed and a red carpet rolled out for guests at last night’s glittering event, which honour the best pubs, clubs, bars, tourist attractions and entertainment venues.

Noddy get a kiss, he is writing his signature for SLADE fan Piotr from Poland, who is living now at UK.

Black Country legend Noddy Holder MBE made a special appearance and presented the award for Best Large Concert Venue to the Civic Hall, where he recalled performing with Slade 50 years ago.

“I knew I was back home in the Black Country today when I stopped off to buy a newspaper and the staff at the petrol station recognised my accent,” he declared to delighted fans.

The former Slade frontman was there to officially become the first name on the Civic Hall’s Wall of Fame– unveiled to celebrate the venue’s 70th anniversary this year. The wall takes the form of a motorway sign and will be on the Civic’s stage for the rest of the year while bands perform.

Best venues shine alongside stars

Pub landlords, theatre bosses and tourist attraction staff were facing a sleepless night tonight as they waited to see if they were to be named among the region’s entertainment elite.

The third annual Express & Star Spotlight Awards takes place tomorrow - and with a star-studded line-up, as well as a host of awards for our best days and nights out, it’s shaping up to be the best yet.

The event at Wolverhampton’s Civic Hall honours all those venues that pull out all the stops.

Former Slade frontman Noddy Holder MBE is the night’s special guest, presenting an award before becoming the first name on the Civic Hall’s Wall of Fame, created as part of the venue’s 70th anniversary celebrations.

Hotel to keep Robin abreast of times

A new hotel based at one of Wolverhampton’s top music venues will open next month. Eight bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms are being created at the Robin 2, meaning guests can flop into bed after watching some of the country’s best groups and tribute acts.

Three years ago the Robin underwent a grand refurbishment in which a new bar named after former Slade star Noddy Holder was created.
